Street named after late Abdullah Omran Taryam (Wam) / 5 February 2014 Shaikh Mohammed orders changing the name of Al Thuraya Street and renaming it after the late Abdullah Omran Taryam. His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on Tuesday ordered changing the name of Al Thuraya Street and renaming it after the late Abdullah Omran Taryam. The kind gesture of Shaikh Mohammed was a token of appreciation to Taryam’s patriotic contributions, pioneering role in the march of the Union, and through the different national posts he had held including the portfolios of the ministry of justice and the ministry of education. The gesture was also in recognition for Taryam’s prominent role in leading the movement of thought and familiarisation in the society, and his participation in galvanizing the pillars of the GCC media, namely through his Arabic daily Al Khaleej, that he cofounded. The 6-kilometre-long new street passes through the Dubai Technology and Media Free Zone, starting from Umm Suqeim near Dubai Police Academy parallel to Al Sufouh Street. The two-lane street passes through the Dubai Media City crossing Shaikh Zayed Street in the direction of Greens Nursery locality, and ends at the First Al Khail Road on the entrance of Jebel Ali Horse Race Course. President and CEO of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), Mattar Al Tayer, said the authority, in pursuance of the directives of Shaikh Mohammed, will commence immediately on replacing the road signboards within the next few days. NCMS warns of rough waters in Arabian Gulf

NCMS warns of rough waters in Arabian Gulf (WAM) / 5 February 2014 People have been advised to stay away from the water and exercise caution if they must venture out into the sea. The National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) has today reiterated its previous cautions and warnings to mariners in the Arabian Gulf due to current high seas. The centre added that waves reached a height of 12 feet in the Arabian Gulf, with strong and active north-westerly winds. People have been advised to stay away from the water and exercise caution if they must venture out into the sea. Dubai to get three more parks, a public square

Dubai to get three more parks, a public square Sajila Saseendran / 5 February 2014 Dubai Municipality announces that it would open new parks in Al Twar 2, Oud Muteena, and Al Mizhar 1 neighbourhoods. The proposed plan of the neighbourhood park at Al Twar 2. — Supplied photo Dubai will get three more neighbourhood parks and a public square by the first quarter of 2015 at a cost of 14.6 million, as part of plans to “convert the city to a real green oasis.” The Dubai Municipality (DM) on Tuesday announced that it would open new parks in Al Twar 2, Oud Muteena, and Al Mizhar 1 neighbourhoods.  The public square project is planned in Muhaisnah 3. The four projects would be executed in a total area of 7.46 hectares. The announcement followed approval of the civic body’s projects by Shaikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and UAE Finance Minister, and chairman of the Dubai Municipality. Al Twar 2 Neighbourhood Park >   To be built in a total area of 2 hectares, the park will have a main building that includes security office, store and public utility services and a plaza that is connected with paved walking tracks with shaded seating arrangement alongside. Children’s play areas will be provided for the age group 2-5 and 6-12 separately. Separate areas for families as well as a 520-metre running track along with the warm-up play area are the other facilities of the park, which will be have a lighting system powered by solar energy.   >   Oud Al Muteena Neighbourhood Park This residential park is a multi-purpose entertainment spot mainly for women and youths residing in Oud Muteena area. The project which is built in 3.26 hectare area will have family area, main building, walking track, plaza and kids area on one side. On the other side, four play areas for football, another one for volleyball, a 575-metre rubberised running track are also provided. The park is separated from the outer area with a metal wall.   Al Mizhar 1 Neighbourhood Park >   It is the first of the three garden projects planned in Al Mizhar 1 residential area and is executed as part of the policy to expand the green areas in the emirate as well as within the efforts to increase areas for entertainment, recreation and tourism purposes. The 1.2 hectare project will have different kind of trees and other common facilities including 400-metre long running track around the park.   Public Square in Al Muhaisnah 3 >   This project will add to the beauty of the area and will be built in an area of one hectare. It will have a family area, shaded benches, service building, paved walkways, children’s play area, and a medium-sized plaza. All the lighting system will be operated using solar energy. Director-General of the DM Hussain Nasser Lootah in a Press statement said special consideration will be given to people of special needs in the project design and all safety measures will be taken into account. He said the projects were in line with Dubai Municipality’s efforts to provide the public enough facilities for entertainment and recreation and as part of its policy to increase green spaces in the city. Lootah said Dubai Municipality plans to convert the city to a real green oasis where people can enjoy good cool breeze and greenery. Play area equipment, shaded seating area, walking-tracks with wooden benches alongside, separate public utility services for ladies, gents and for people with special needs and other facilities would be available in the projects. DM has planned to plant enough trees, bushes, flowers and lawns in the projects to ensure a green environment that relaxes the minds of visitors.
