More technology for public schools in UAE
More technology for public schools in UAE Muaz Shabandri / 28 January 2014 Ministry of Education announces opening of its first technology centre to connect students in different emirates. It is raining technology and e-learning for public schools in UAE. After the successful launch of a YouTube channel for students of UAE public schools, the UAE Ministry of Education has now announced the opening of its first technology centre to connect students in different emirates. The hub is equipped with massive touch screens that can work as demonstration units for technology solutions and smart education tools. The whole centre is equipped with video conferencing capability that will enable up to 60 people to have a live session and connect all future technology hubs together. Humaid Mohammed Obeid Al Qattami, UAE Minister of Education, said: “The centre will be a hub for smart education, R&D and experiential educational tools that is located at the UAE Ministry of Education offices in Dubai and across the country connected over etisalat network. The centre with its state-of-the art equipment is in line with our direction towards the implementation of digital schools and smart learning.” The centre also has a multimedia production room that will be used for making of tutorials and videos which can be shared via the Internet and social media immediately upon filming. The multimedia room is equipped with an electronic white board that is used to create electronic content. Saleh Al Abdooli, CEO of etisalat UAE, said: “Our role is to utilise the best technology available in the world to provide the best to our people and especially the student community. Etisalat is proud to work with the Ministry of Education again as well as technology partners enabling government initiatives and smart education in the country.’ The ministry has partnered with etisalat and Microsoft for creating the first technology hub as similar hubs are planned for other emirates in the future. “We believe that empowered educators, supervisors and school leaders will help bring innovation in teaching and learning to the students inside and outside the classroom and enable them with 21st century skills for lifetime employability and entrepreneurship,” said Khalil Abdel Massih, academic programme manager, Microsoft Middle East and Africa. muaz@khaleejtimes.com For more news from Khaleej Times, follow us on Facebook at facebook.com/khaleejtimes , and on Twitter at @khaleejtimes Continue reading
UAE, UK to fight organised crime
UAE, UK to fight organised crime Sudeshna Sarkar (sudeshna@khaleejtimes.com) / 8 October 2013 With around 6,000 criminal groups — which add up to 38,000 organised criminals — targeting the UK, from home soil as well as overseas, security agencies need more teeth to protect the islands. A shot in the arm came on Monday with the launch of a new organisation that will work with UAE law enforcement agencies to tackle some of the world’s toughest and most organised criminals. The National Crime Agency (NCA), accountable to British Home Secretary Theresa May and to be headed by a chief constable, will be staffed with more than 4,000 specialist crime fighters fanned over 40 global locations. Its reach will stretch across 150 countries. The NCA will work with UAE partner agencies and organisations to tackle drugs trafficking, child sexual exploitation, human trafficking, immigration crime and cyber crime. Since the UAE is a major financial centre, the two sides will also jointly fight money laundering and the investment of criminal assets. UAE partners and the NCA will pool in intelligence on joint threats and targets. If required, they will also intercept people, property and money moving to and from the UK. Dominic Jermey, the British Ambassador to the UAE, said the bilateral cooperation between the UK and the UAE covers an enormous range, including tackling organised crime. “The NCA will allow law enforcement agencies in both countries to join hands and use their shared expertise to track down the perpetrators of serious crimes and bring them to justice,” he said. The UK already has officers from its Serious Organised Crime Agency, Revenue and Customs, and Counter Terrorism and Extremism actively based in the UAE, working together with local UAE contacts and agencies. Their actions involve identifying and targeting major British criminals involved in organised/fiscal crime harming the UK and related assets. These officers have been holding regular operational meetings with police and immigration in Abu Dhabi and Dubai to discuss trends and agree on responses. May said the NCA was born of the realisation that organised crime was one of the greatest threats to national security. Every year it costs the UK between £20 billion and £40 billion per year, She said the impact is felt every single day: “The drug dealing on street corners; the burglary and muggings by addicts; the trafficking of vulnerable young women into prostitution; the card cloning and credit card fraud that robs so many.” The NCA, she added, will transform the authorities’ response. KK, Shalmali to perform at MTV concert tonight
KK, Shalmali to perform at MTV concert tonight David Light / 4 October 2013 A veritable musical institution, MTV’s Unplugged series has always endeavoured to bring audiences the bare bones of popular artists’ work, allowing performers to record a set for broadcast with the minimal amount of accompaniment. Since its inception in 1989, acts such as Nirvana, Mariah Carey and Bob Dylan have proved their mettle by playing acoustic versions of their greatest hits. MTV India also provides the same platform for artists to showcase their talents. From 9pm onwards this evening, however, the channel is going one step further. In celebration of its first anniversary of operations in the Mena region, instead of airing an Unplugged episode, the station will be putting on a live concert at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel in Dubai. Featuring KK and Shalmali Kholgade, the event will maintain its television counterpart’s modest approach and allow guests to get to grips with the meaning behind the tunes. Bollywood singer KK has recorded over 500 Hindi songs during his career and more than 200 songs in other languages. Some of his popular tracks include Party on my mind from Race 2, Yaaron from his award-winning album Pal and It’s time to disco. Twenty five-year-old Shalmali Kholgade has experimented with Western and classical music, but is perhaps best known as the lead female vocalist, dubbing for Parineeti Chopra, on the track Pareshaan in the film Ishaqzaade — a song which has won her a host of prizes. A few of her other famous tunes include Daaru Desi from Cocktail, Lat Lag Gayi from Race 2, and BalamPichkari from Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. Tickets for the Safina Ballroom, Jumeirah Beach Hotel concert are available at Time out Tickets, Dobazaar.com, Spinneys Outlets, Barter Card and Chin Chaaus Restaurant; by calling: 04 3393179/056 7397041; or by emailing tickets@emiratesevents.com. david@khaleejtimes.com Continue reading
