The testing of Dubai Tram, a rail vehicle that will run heavily on tracks along streets spanning 10.6 kilometres from Dubai Marina to Al Sufouh, begins at Zone 1 on January 26. Tracks being laid of Al Sufouh Tramway from Dubai Marina. – KT photos by Rahul Gajjar The Dubai Tram, which measures 44 meters in length, with fully air-conditioned carriages designed as a combination of luxurious interiors and state-of-the-art technology, will go for testing on January 26 for Zone 1, April 16 for Zone 2 and June 14 for Zone 3 and will continue until November 10. However, during the testing, Dubai Tram will not be open to passengers. A part of Dubai Government’s effort to provide a modern and integrated public transit system to efficiently serve densely populated areas and new developed areas in the emirate, Dubai Tram will also have allocated spaces for passengers using wheel chairs or mobility aid. “This area is marked with a wheelchair symbol and will have special marked call buttons that allow passengers using wheelchairs or mobility aids extra time to get in and out of the Tram. It will also have access ramps for mobility-impaired passengers, including people in wheelchairs, parents with prams and the elderly,” RTA said. Designed to be an environment-friendly transportation, the Dubai Tram is expected to be the choice of residents, who will leave their cars at home and take the Tram, to go around Dubai. It is powered by electricity to reduce the pollution from the daily traffic jams, making it the fastest, more reliable, and eco-friendly way to get around. RTA said the Dubai Tram has a maximum speed of 50km/hour with a total trip time of 42 minutes and with a capacity of 405 passengers who will be aboard the four cars for the silver class, two cars for women and children, and one car for the gold class. “Dubai Trams are quiet and run on much wider tracks so they cannot swerve to avoid obstacles. It will be running along seven stations such as Jumeirah Beach Residence 1, Jumeirah Beach Residence 2, Jumeirah Lakes Towers, Dubai Marina Mall, Dubai Marina, Marina Towers, Mina Seyahi, Media City, Palm Jumeirah, to Knowledge Village and Al Sufouh,” the RTA said. The Dubai Tram system is integrated with Dubai Metro system at two stations in Dubai Marina and in Jumeirah Lakes Towers. “Footbridges provide a direct link between the two adjacent Tram and Metro stations for a smooth and seamless interchange for passengers between the two systems. To top it all, Dubai Tram stations are designed to be in harmony with the Metro stations reflecting the region’s art and ethnic heritage yet set in urban context. UAE court convicts 30 Muslim Brotherhood men Staff Reporter / 22 January 2014 State Security Circuit at the Federal Supreme Court orders the convicts to be jailed for terms ranging from three months to five years. Thirty people accused of links to the Muslim Brotherhood, and charged with setting up a branch of the organisation in the UAE, were sentenced by the State Security Circuit at the Federal Supreme Court to jail terms ranging from three months to five years. The verdicts were issued in the presence of 24 accused. Six others were sentenced in absentia. Fair trial, says human rights association In a statement, the Emirates Human Rights Association said it had followed up the trials of 20 Egyptians and 10 Emiratis, who were allegedly involved in the Egyptian Muslims brotherhood cell, at the Supreme Federal court in Abu Dhabi. “The prosecutions were held in a transparent, clear and open aura,” the statement said, noting that the defendants, throughout the trial, were defending themselves and through lawyers. The trial was attended by representatives from Egypt’s embassy and Egyptian Journalists Syndicate. In reply to a question on the arrest and torture, Jameela Al Hamili, member of the board of directors of the association said the procedures of arrest are legal, and no complaint on torture was sent. news@khaleejtimes.com Earlier, the court heard statements from the accused, the defence team and witnesses and reviewed the reports of experts. The court also ordered the dissolution of the Brotherhood in the UAE, closure of all its offices, as well as confiscation of seized equipment. It also ordered the deportation of the foreign national accused after completion of their jail terms. According to a copy of the verdict which has been obtained by Khaleej Times , Medhat Rajab Abdellah Ammar was sentenced to five years in jail, while Saleh Faraj Daifallah Al Malhatani, Salah Mohammed Rizq Al Mashad, Ibrahim Abdel Aziz Ibrahim Ahmed, Murad Mohammed Hamid Othman Badawi, Othman Abdel Rahman Suliman Matkees, Al Sayyid Awaad Hifni Moussa, Hamada Abdel Aziz Abdel Maqsood and Saleh Mohammed Saleh Al Dhufairti were each sentenced to four years in prison. Ahmed Mahmoud Taha was acquitted of the charges. Ahmed Labeeb Jaffar , Hassan Mohammed Hassan Ahmed, Khalid Mohammed Abdullah Al Shaiba Al Nuaimi, Hamad Hassan Ali Reqait, Ali Saeed Al Ghandi, Rashid Omran Al Shamsi, Mohammed Ali Saleh Al Mansour, Tariq Ibrahim Abdel Rahim Al Qasim and Hussein Ali Abdullah Al Najjar were ordered to serve a year in prison. Ahmed Rashid Al Taboor Al Nuaimi, Hassan Mohammed Hassan Ahmed, Khalid Mohammed Abdullah Al Shaiba Al Nuaimi, Hamad Hassan Ali Reqait and Saleh Mohammed Saleh Al Dhufairi each received three months, while another defendant Hamad Hassan Ali Reqait was let off with a fine of Dh3,000. The foreign nationals accused in the plan are to be deported after serving out their jail terms. The sitting judge, in his ruling said: “Inspired by the rules of the Islamic Shariah, and guided by the principles of the law, the court has given the defendants to prove their innocene and has conducted the trial with utmost transparency as per the UAE constitution and international conventions.” “This court had issued its verdict studying the documents and results of investigations, as well listening to the statements of the defendants,” the judge said. The Public Prosecution stressed that the accused intended to set up a branch affiliated to the Egypt-based Muslim Brotherhood. “They structured the organisation and set up a general administrative centre under which there are central committees and offices, which are located all over the country.” The Muslim Brotherhood members collected monthly subscription fee, the prosecution told the court. Their actions posed a threat to state security, the prosecution said, and added that their investigation was held in a fair manner. He made the remarks while attending the graduation day of 120 graduates of the UAE Assessors Programme and Excellence Experts Diploma. Speaking to the graduates, Shaikh Mohammed said: “Our country needs your efforts to walk towards achieving the national march steadily and confidently and drawing new reality for government action and the establishment of the Future Government; our confidence in you is great as you possess all the components of success. “We are proud to develop governmental work with Emirati hands and we are doing our best to prepare Emirati people and enable them in accordance with the requirements of the next phase of national work to achieve the national vision 2021.” Also present at the ceremony held at the Presidential Palace, were Lt.-General Shaikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior; Shaikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs; and Shaikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Foreign Minister, and other ministers. The Shaikh Khalifa Government Excellence Programme organised the graduation day of the first batch of Excellence Programmes: Excellence Experts Diploma for Federal Entities and the U.A.E. Assessors Programme for non-federal entities, as part of the programme’s initiatives in spreading the culture of excellence, supporting continuous learning and capacity building.
