DM wants to wipe out ‘dirty’ buildings before Expo
DM wants to wipe out ‘dirty’ buildings before Expo 2020 Staff Reporter / 25 March 2014 Building Department of the Dubai Municipality intensifies inspections, urges owners to beautify/repair structures. Dusty and dull-looking buildings in Dubai are likely to be a thing of the past soon as owners are being asked to go for a makeover in a new campaign aimed at beautifying the emirate in the run-up to Expo 2020. New or old buildings located along the Metro lines and on key roads are mainly targeted in the beautification drive launched by the Building Department of the Dubai Municipality. The department has intensified inspections of buildings to check whether they are up to the mark according to Dubai’s global status as part of efforts to maintain the aesthetic beauty and positive image of the city, and in preparation for the upcoming Expo 2020, the civic body said on Monday. Khalid Mohammed Salah, director of the department, said the campaign, fielding all manpower at the department including engineers and inspectors, would be focusing on all buildings in the emirate in general and on those in key areas in particular. Jaber Ahmed Al Ali, head of the Building Inspection Section, said the department has issued notices to many building owners to carry out necessary maintenance or painting works or cleaning of the building façades. He said inspections had been intensified in the buildings situated on both sides of Red and Green Lines of Dubai Metro. The department’s efforts have seen positive results as many owners responded spontaneously to act according to civic body’s instructions. The official pointed out that the civic body has high concerns over buildings which are poorly constructed or abandoned midway of construction as they are considered black marks in a city which is advancing to newer heights. According to him, the inspectors at the civic body are routinely inspecting such buildings including the abandoned ones and duly issuing notices to the owners. Al Ali also urged the public to support the municipality’s efforts to make Dubai a beautiful city ahead of Expo 2020 by notifying about bad practices to its call centre 800900 and by doing modifications and necessary beautifications in their buildings. sajila@khaleejtimes.com For more news from Khaleej Times, follow us on Facebook at facebook.com/khaleejtimes , and on Twitter at @khaleejtimes Continue reading
Solar energy to power ACs in bus shelters
Solar energy to power ACs in bus shelters Staff Reporter / 24 March 2014 The Green Bus experiment that uses solar energy instead of conventional energy sources is also still on, says Dr Yousef Al Ali, CEO of Public Transport Authority. Solar energy might soon power bus screens and air conditioned bus shelters, according to a Roads and Transport official. Dr Yousef Al Ali, CEO of Public Transport Authority (PTA) said: “The agency has recently carried out a series of experiments on the use of solar energy instead of conventional energy sources.” “A number of projects based on solar power as a main source of power supply are currently being studied by the Energy Conservation Team of the agency,” he said. “The team is examining a host of initiatives including the use of solar cells to generate the power needed for the operation of bus screens and air-conditioned shelters, besides heating water using solar energy panels fitted to the buildings and premises of the agency,” he said. “The use of solar energy is currently being experimented to power monitors displaying real-time information fitted to bus passenger stations. The experiment was rolled out from bus passenger station at Al Ghubaiba. Approvals were issued at the start of this year to transform and redesign Al Khawaneej Station to be a Model Green Station, and for this purpose specific programmes are being developed for the station covering power consumption, the use of solar energy instead of the ordinary power supply, and the endorsement as well as the introduction of other environmental systems which are environment-friendly and fulfill the stipulations of sustainable development,” explained Al Ali. The Green Bus experiment that uses solar energy instead of conventional energy sources is also still on, said Al Ali adding that Al Khawaneej Station is also being turned into a Model Green Station that will operate on solar power. “The Green Bus model, which is fully illuminated by solar energy cells, is probably the best illustration of the ongoing researches aimed at protecting the environment and embracing the green economy as well as sustainable development concepts,” said Al Ali. “The agency embarked on the Green Bus experiment towards the end of 2012 and the experiment is still in motion and is subject expansion to include larger numbers of the agency’s bus fleet,” he said. news@khaleejtimes.com For more news from Khaleej Times, follow us on Facebook at facebook.com/khaleejtimes , and on Twitter at @khaleejtimes Continue reading
Catch this high-speed train from a skyscraper!
Catch this high-speed train from a skyscraper! (IANS) / 24 March 2014 The vertical train hub aims to resolve the inevitable challenges that cities will face by 2075, and offers a deliverable and sustainable solution for the future of the transport generation. Imagine taking your seat on a high-speed train through an elevator that is parked on the side of a skyscraper. It may sound wild but two British designers have the concept ready to roll on the track. Called as the Hyper-Speed Vertical Train Hub, this unusual transportation concept is the brainchild of designers Christopher Christophi and Lucas Mazarrasa. “The vertical train hub aims to resolve the inevitable challenges that cities will face by 2075, and offers a deliverable and sustainable solution for the future of the transport generation,” Christophi was quoted as saying. Here, the station for high-speed rail is built on the side of a skyscraper. As the train travels and transitions from its horizontal formation and ascends up the facade vertically, the carriages will pivot similar to that on a ‘Ferris wheel’. It would allow the passengers within the carriage to remain in an upright position and facing towards the cityscape, said a report on eVolo website. The carriages would be supported by a magnetic structure located at either side — eliminating the need for rails beneath and allowing the carriages and its passengers to connect to the tower. Trains, once ready to move, would shoot down the sides of the building into underground tunnels to their destinations. Each coach would have 10 people in two rows facing each other. Take an elevator to a specific floor to catch your train. Each terminal would have its own set of elevators to increase efficiency, the report added.
