Bill Clinton: Dubai In “Strong Position” To Win Expo 2020 Bid
The former US President says the emirate’s model of “shared prosperity” is an inspiration for the Middle East. Former US President Bill Clinton has said that Dubai is in a “strong position” to win the bid for Expo 2020 thanks to the UAE’s achievements and its cultural diversity. Clinton, who visited the UAE to address the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) in Abu Dhabi, told students at the American University in Dubai: “Places that have come back from the tough economic crisis the best and the quickest are the ones which have an operative model which creates cooperation across all sectors of society, races, religions, and ethnic groups, where people find a way to celebrate and are proud of their differences and they work together in shared responsibility. “That’s what Dubai and the UAE represent and I think you are in a strong position to win the bid for Expo 2020 because Dubai’s model of shared prosperity is more important today than ever and an inspiration to many countries in the Middle East.” Dubai is competing against four other candidate cities including Ayutthaya (Thailand), Ekaterinburg (Russia), Izmir (Turkey) and Sao Paulo (Brazil) to host the mega event. Staged one in five years and last held in Shanghai, the event provides a major economic boost as it attracts millions of visitors from around the world. If the emirate succeeds in its bid, this will be the first time the World Expo is held in the Middle East. The winning city will be announced in November 2013 following a vote by the 161 member nations of the Paris-based Bureau International des Expositions (BIE). Continue reading
$550,000 Lamborghini for Dubai Police
Dubai: In a city of boundless bling, Dubai Police also are in hot pursuit after adding a nearly $550,000 Lamborghini to its fleet. The sports car, painted in green-and-white colours of the Dubai force, will not likely be roaring after law breakers. Instead, it will be mostly dispatched to tourist areas to show – in the words of Major General Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, Dubai Police’s Deputy Commander General – “how classy Dubai is.” The two-door, two-seater sports car, which can reach speeds of up to 217mph, has been painted in the green-and-white colours of the Dubai Police force. It can go from 0 to 62mph in 2.9 seconds. The Aventador was described by Lamborghini on its website as “a one-of-a-kind piece of art”. Local media reports on Thursday say the Italian-made Lamborghini Aventador is the crown jewel of a wider upgrade in Dubai Police wheels. The force also is adding some American muscle car Camaros. Dubai is set to host yet another live music extravaganza today (April 12th) when Bruno Mars and Paloma Faith take to the stage at the Media City Amphitheatre. The emirate continues to attract the biggest names in the industry and it seems that barely a week goes by without a renowned performer putting on a show in the Gulf.Mars is a singer-songwriter from the US and he has developed a very distinctive sound. It is hard to pigeonhole the 27-year-old in one particular genre, as his songs have reggae, blues, funk and Motown influences. He has amassed a sizeable fanbase in recent years and his legions of followers in the UAE will be delighted that he is set to appear live. The talented performer will be joined on the bill by eccentric British songstress Paloma Faith, Gulf News reports.Faith – who is also 27 – is renowned for songs such as Stone Cold Sober and New York, in which she demonstrates her incredible vocal range. The singer is also known for her whacky dresses and cute British charm. She has received praise from a number of top-class international performers in recent years, including Annie Lennox.Having two acclaimed acts on the same concert lineup is obviously a major boost for Dubai's credentials as a musical hotspot. Most performers are primarily attracted to the city because of the huge sums of money that are available and of course the stunning array of five-star hotels, gorgeous beaches and myriad designer boutiques also help to sweeten the deal.Justin Bieber is expected to appear in the emirate on May 4th and it is hard to think of too many bigger acts in the world at the moment. The likes of Kanye West, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, The Stone Roses and Noel Gallagher have all taken to the stage in the UAE in the recent past, which further demonstrates the country's ability to lure the creme de la creme of the music business.
