Etisalat donates Dh3m to Mohammed’s Ramadan Campaign (Wam) / 14 July 2013 Etisalat, on Sunday, announced a donation of Dh3 million to provide clothing for 75,000 needy children around the world as part of its support to Ramadan campaign launched by His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Ministerof the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to dress 1 million needy children. Etisalat has allocated 50 million SMS to support the donation campaign. The initiative will receive further support by sending SMS to subscribers spreading awareness and encouraging them to donate. The initiative plans to provide clothing to 1 million needy children globally. The campaign will continue until the 19th day of Ramadan (July 28) which falls on the ‘Emirati Humanitarian Work Day’ and marks the 9th anniversary of the death of the late Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Ahmad Abdulkarim Julfar, CEO, Etisalat Group, said: “H.H. Shaikh Mohammed’s initiatives have always touched millions of lives in the region and globally reaching out to the needy regardless of race, colour or religion. This kind of important initiatives puts the UAE in the spotlight and highlights its leading position as a global centre for humanitarian action.” Contributions can be made by sending ‘dress’ via SMS to 7040 donating Dh40 to dress one child, to 7,160 contributing Dh160 to dress four children, to 7240 donating Dh240 to dress six children and to 7400 contributing Dh400 to dress 10 children. El Baradei sworn in as Egypt Vice-President (AFP) / 14 July 2013 Prominent liberal Egyptian leader Mohamed El Baradei was sworn in on Sunday as Egypt’s interim vice-president for foreign relations, the presidency said in a statement. The appointment of El Baradei, a former head of the UN nuclear watchdog and a Nobel peace laureate, follows the military overthrow of Islamist president Mohammed Mursi on July 3. He was initially tipped to lead the cabinet, but his nomination was rejected by the ultra-conservative Salafist party Al Nur. El Baradei was late last year named head of the National Salvation Front, a coalition of leftist and liberal groups, formed in the wake of a power grab by Mursi in November. Continue reading

The devout move closer to the Almighty Allah, seeking His forgiveness and mercy by offering salah and fasting. One of the significant features of the holy month is that it encourages charity by creating empathy towards the have-nots. But Ramadan is not just about fasting and prayers. The city comes alive with family and friends getting together to break the fast (Iftar).
