Police interrogate ‘lovers’ of woman cardboard bomber

Police interrogate ‘lovers’ of woman cardboard bomber Amira Agarib / 4 September 2013 Police are interrogating a number of potential former and current lovers of the woman who threatened to blow up herself, her son and the Dubai Public Prosecution headquarters on Sunday. The woman, 32-year-old Uzbeki Zulfiya Hamraeva who is now in police custody along with her five-year-old son, was engaged in a 13-hour standoff with a Dubai Police negotiating team, which lasted from midday on Sunday till 1.30am on Monday. She entered the building, with what appeared to be a belt of explosives, which she threatened to detonate unless officials recognised her son was fathered by an Emirati man she was in an unofficial Urfi marriage with. However, once the woman was arrested, it transpired the ‘belt’ was a cardboard carton, with two softdrink cans. The police have arrested a 33-year-old Emirati man — a captain in one of the country’s services — who was discovered at a flat in Dubai’s Discovery Gardens. The man, understood to be married with children, was the last person Hamraeva was in contact with before committing the stunt. Police have also arrested a Pakistani man who was tracked through CCTV footage, after he dropped Hamraeva off at the Public Prosecution building prior to the incident. The man has reportedly told police he had no romantic connection to the woman, but just dropped her off places from time to time. Police have also allegedly detained a number of other men who Hamraeva had connections to and may have been in relationships with. Police are conducting paternity tests on all the men, as well as interrogating them to determine whether they played any part in helping Hamraeva conduct the bomb scare. Police still have her and her son in custody, while investigations continue, though it appears likely she will be charged with offences relating to affecting UAE security and inciting panic. news@khaleejtimes.com Continue reading

17,467 tickets issued forusing phones while driving

17,467 tickets issued forusing phones while driving Staff Reporter / 4 September 2013 The Abu Dhabi Police Directorate of Traffic and Patrols issued 17,467 tickets during the first seven months of the year against motorists who were caught using their mobile phones while at the wheel. The directorate called upon motorists to avoid using mobile phones while driving, warning them of the risks of speaking on their mobiles as well as, reading and writing text messages, as it could lead to serious traffic accidents due to a motorists lack of concentration. Manager of the Serious Accidents Investigation Branch at the Directorate Major Abdullah Al Suwaidi, said committing such a violation also inhibits proper physical control of the vehicle’s steering as the motorist is preoccupied with holding his/her mobile device to identify the caller or to communicate with others. Maj Al Suwaidi urged drivers to avoid this bad habit so as to ensure their safety and to not disrupt traffic and cause traffic congestion. Moreover, he called on them to consider that their life is more precious than the time wasted by answering a phone call, particularly since traffic accidents occur in less than a second. He also stressed that the directorate has tightened traffic control on internal and external roads for drivers who are caught using mobile phones while driving. Violators will face a fine of Dh200 and four black points on their traffic record. news@khaleejtimes.com Continue reading

Standoff at Public Prosecution ends, woman arrested Amira Agarib & Marie Nammour / 2 September 2013 A woman who threatened to blow herself up with her five-year-old son at the Dubai Public Prosecution headquarters has surrendered and was taken into custody, police said early on Monday. Police said they reached a breakthrough in the negotiations with the Uzbek woman a little after 1am on Monday morning. Officials negotiating with the woman. – Courtesy Twitter The woman had entered the department at noon on Sunday and claimed she was wearing an explosives belt and the Government of Dubai Media Office said she “threatened to blow herself up if she doesn’t receive help to end a personal dispute to prove the fatherhood of her child. “Dubai Police immediately evacuated the building and the surrounding area taking all precautionary measures to secure the place and ensure the safety of all individuals who are in the vicinity of the building,” the Press statement by the Government of Dubai Media Office said. “Preliminary assessment of the incident shows that the woman resorted to this extreme action in an attempt to attract attention and win sympathy that may help her put an end to this family dispute,” the statement said. Sources said the woman entered the building around midday and wanted to meet senior officials to explain her plight. The sources said she had previously visited the prosecution headquarters several times and that problems with her husband drove her to this desperate act. A picture of the evacuated building main hall was circulated by an unknown source after the incident was first reported. An advocate told Khaleej Times that if the woman was indeed carrying explosives, she would get a stiff penalty. The penalty would depend on whether the act results in the damage of public or private property. “She disrupted a public department after the authorities had to evacuate it. The staff had to be put out of work. Besides, her talk about carrying explosives and her threats of using them could have resulted in a public panic and disorder. – news@jkhaleejtimes.com Continue reading
